Micron Technology (MU) — Deep-Dive Report

Date: 2026-09-12 (Saturday; market closed — last session close 2026-09-11) Analyst: Research harness (agent), research-only — no trade executed

1. Conclusion Summary

View: Constructive / bullish on the AI-driven memory supercycle thesis, but valuation has re-rated dramatically and near-term price action is stretched after a parabolic move. Confidence: Medium. The fundamental inflection (DRAM/NAND pricing and margins) is real and documented in filings, but it is a highly cyclical business, and the stock is up >1,000% off its 2-year low with a trailing P/E >120x — the market has already priced in a large, multi-year step-change in earnings power, so most of the "easy" re-rating may be behind us.

What would change my mind:

likely due late Sep/early Oct 2026) confirms further sequential ASP increases and gross margin holding near/above the 85% level reported in Q3 FY26, plus continued strategic customer agreement (take-or-pay) additions.

gross margin compression, inventory build at customers, or a break of the SMA50 (currently ~$929) with rising volume — memory cycles have historically reversed fast once supply catches up.

data through 2026-09-11; no FY2026 Q4/full-year 10-K is available yet.

2. Business & Business Model (source: FY2025 10-K, filed 2025-10-03, Item 1 Business)

Micron is a memory/storage semiconductor manufacturer producing DRAM, NAND, and NOR products sold under the Micron and Crucial brands, through wholly-owned fabs plus subcontractors. As of the FY2025 10-K, the company reorganized into four reportable segments:

(high-bandwidth memory) for data center.

memory + storage.

FY2025 revenue mix by segment: CMBU 36%, MCBU 32%, CDBU 19%, AEBU 13% (10-K). By FY2026 Q3 the mix had shifted further toward data center: CMBU 33%, CDBU 28%, MCBU 28%, AEBU 11% (10-Q, quarter ended 2026-05-28) — i.e., AI/data-center-linked CMBU+CDBU rose from 55% to 61% of revenue in three quarters.

Competitive dynamics: capital-intensive, commodity-like pricing historically, but the 10-K/10-Q now describe a structural shift — "AI-driven memory and storage growth is outpacing industry supply," and Micron has begun signing multi-year, take-or-pay strategic customer agreements with fixed or floor/ceiling pricing, which management says should yield "gross margins well above our peak quarterly margins in any past cycle" (FY2026 Q3 10-Q, Industry Conditions section). This is a judgment-relevant, company-stated change in business model durability, not yet proven across a full cycle.

3. Financial Quality (source: sec_company_facts, 10-K/10-Q XBRL)

202537.388.547.599.7717.5239.8%

Gross margin/op. income computed from GrossProfit/Revenues XBRL facts (10-K reported figures match: 2025=40%, 2024=22%, 2023=-9%, per 10-K MD&A table).

Growth: Revenue 3y CAGR (FY22→FY25) = +6.8%; 5y CAGR (FY21→FY25) = +7.8% — modest on a straight-line basis because the series contains a deep trough (FY2023) and a boom (FY2025). Not a smooth grower — this is a classic cyclical.

Profitability trend: Net margin swung from +28% (FY22) to -37% (FY23) to +23% (FY25). Direction over the last two years is sharply improving, driven by ASP recovery, not cost cuts alone.

Earnings quality: Operating cash flow exceeded net income in every year shown, including the FY2023 loss year (OCF +$1.56B vs. NI -$5.83B) — D&A and non-cash inventory write-downs cushion cash generation in downturns. No red flag on OCF vs. NI.

Balance sheet: Liabilities/Equity rose from 0.34x (FY21) to 0.53x (FY25) as Micron funded fab expansion, but equity also grew from $43.9B to $54.2B — growth funded mostly by retained earnings, not dilution. Diluted shares outstanding rose only ~1.1B→1.12B (≈2.5%) over 4 years — minimal dilution despite heavy capex.

Q22026-02-2623.8612.0774%
Q32026-05-2841.4624.6785%

Per the Q3 FY2026 10-Q MD&A: Q3 revenue +74% Q/Q and +346% Y/Y; DRAM ASPs up "low-60%" Q/Q and "low-260%" Y/Y; gross margin expanded from 38% (Q3 FY25) to 85% (Q3 FY26). 9-month FY2026 revenue = $78.96B vs. $26.06B in 9M FY2025 (+203% Y/Y), 9-month diluted EPS sum = $41.34 (Q1+Q2+Q3). This is an extraordinary, filings-documented acceleration — judgment note: magnitudes this large are unusual even for memory cycles; treat the run-rate as reflecting a specific supply-shortage/AI-demand window rather than a new steady state until confirmed over more quarters.

4. Valuation (source: stock_quote 2026-09-11 close $975.26; EPS from XBRL above)

rich by the company's own history (FY2021-2025 EPS ranged from -5.34 to 7.75).

average earnings are depressed by the FY2023 loss and don't capture the current boom.

P/E ≈ 17.7x — this is the number the market is plausibly pricing off. If Q4 FY2026 merely holds Q3's pace (rather than growing further), full-year FY2026 EPS could be in the $55-70+ range, putting the stock at a mid-teens forward multiple — cheap-looking if and only if the current pricing/margin regime persists.

"cyclical trough" pricing to "AI supercycle" pricing. The bull case requires the strategic customer agreements (take-or-pay, multi-year) to make the current elevated margins durable, as management explicitly claims. The bear case is that this is peak cycle pricing that historically reverts once industry supply (new fabs, HBM capacity) catches up — Micron's own risk factors flag "volatility in average selling prices" as the #1 listed business risk.

5. Technicals (source: stock_history 730d, scripts/indicators.mjs, as of 2026-09-11 close)

(golden-cross configuration) — daily trend is a firm uptrend.

just above the 20-day average, well above the 50- and 200-day — extended relative to its own long-term trend line.

the prior parabolic run — momentum has cooled from stretched levels). MACD = 18.44 vs. signal 14.55, histogram +3.88 and positive — momentum still tilted bullish but not accelerating sharply.

(price is +536-637% above the 52-week low, per indicators script vs. quote tool). Stock has pulled back from its all-time/52w high but remains far above its base.

stop from current price is roughly $872 (~10.6% away), consistent with the stock's large daily ranges.

unusual volume spike distorting the last few sessions.

Read: Uptrend intact on the daily/weekly time frame (price > SMA50 > SMA200), but the stock is well off its 52-week high and consolidating in the $930-1,040 band over the last few weeks rather than making new highs — a pause after the earlier parabolic advance rather than a clean breakout continuation as of 2026-09-11.

6. Catalysts

  1. FY2026 Q4 / full-year earnings (fiscal year ends ~Aug 27, 2026; report likely due

late Sept/early Oct 2026) — will show whether the Q3 gross-margin/ASP trajectory continued or peaked.

  1. Further strategic customer (take-or-pay) agreements — management has flagged more

are being signed in Q3/Q4 FY2026; each one reduces spot-price cyclicality and improves earnings visibility (10-Q, Industry Conditions).

  1. HBM capacity ramp and AI capex from hyperscalers — CMBU (HBM + hyperscale cloud)

grew from 36% to 33%→ but in dollar terms nearly quadrupled YoY (10-Q); continued hyperscaler AI infrastructure spend is a direct demand driver.

  1. **New fab capacity coming online (Idaho, New York, international sites under CHIPS Act

incentives, per 10-K)** — could be a catalyst either way: supports future revenue, but also risks adding supply that eventually pressures pricing.

7. Risks

  1. ASP volatility / cyclicality — the #1 item in Micron's own Risk Factor Summary

("volatility in average selling prices of our products"); memory cycles have historically reversed sharply once supply catches demand.

  1. Valuation risk — trailing P/E >120x and 5yr-avg-EPS P/E >300x mean the stock has

very little margin for disappointment; any sign of margin deceleration could trigger outsized multiple compression.

  1. Customer concentration / hyperscaler capex cyclicality — heavy reliance on a

relatively small number of large cloud/AI customers (10-K risk factor: "dependency on certain customers"); a slowdown in AI infrastructure capex would hit Micron disproportionately given the current mix shift toward CMBU/CDBU.

  1. Geopolitical/export-control and China risk — international operations and

government-incentive compliance (CHIPS Act) are explicitly flagged risk factors; China has previously restricted Micron sales domestically.

  1. Execution risk on new capacity/technology nodes — 10-K flags "realizing expected

returns from capacity expansions" and competitive risk in developing next-gen DRAM/NAND/HBM nodes against Samsung/SK Hynix.
